"Dressing with towels" Nepal

As I traveled to India and Nepal, I had with me "The Smell of India", by Pier Paolo Pasolini. I had red the book before, but its meaning, its pertinence came to life only in India. "A huge crowd dressed with towels", said the book. An hyperbole, a romantic vision, a poetic image, as I interpreted it back home. In fact, a crude reality, where millions of people were actually dressed with western-style towels, mass-produced in the holy India. Definitively not the ascetic vision of India I expected, nor the romantic image by Pasolini I misinterpreted...

In India e Nepal portai con me "L'odore dell'India" di Pier Paolo Pasolini. Avevo gia' letto il libro, ma il suo significato, la sua pertinenza venne alla luce solo in India. "Una folla enorme vestita di asciugamani", diceva il libro. Un'iperpole, una visione romantica, un'immagine poetica, cosi' interpretai la frase in patria. In effetti si trattava di una cruda descrizione della realta', dove milioni di persone erano in effetti vestite con asciugamani di stile occidentale, prodotti in massa nella santissima India. Definitivamente non la visione ascetica dell'India che mi aspettavo, ne' l'immagine romantica di Pasolini che avevo mal interpretato...
