I was on a bridge in the old part of Shrinagar, taking pictures of a group of children. They got more and more excited, started calling other children, and in few minutes I had a little crowd of thirdy or more of them in front of me, standing against a wall, laughing and smiling, asking loudly to be photographed. A little girl struck me in the midst of the group. She was absolutely serious, standing still, staring at the objective of my camera with such an intensity that I believed the lens was going to break in pieces. The rest of the group just faded away...

Ero su un ponte nella parte vecchia di Srinagar. Avevo cominciato a fotografare un gruppo di bambini senza molta convinzione. I bambini cominciarono a divertirsi, chiamarono altri bambini, e in pochi minuti mi trovai davanti a un gruppo di trenta monelli o piu', contro un muro, che sghignazzavano e ridevano, chiedendomi rumorosamente di essere fotografati. Ad un tratto fui colpito da una bimba in mezzo al gruppo. Assolutamente seria, immobile, che fissava l'obbiettivo della macchina fotografica con una tale intensita' da frantumare le lenti. Il resto del gruppo semplicemente scomparve nel nulla...
